Since 2008, MAHT has served as a partner organization for the Civic Engagement Initiative organized by the Massachusetts Voter Table. For MAHT's tenants and tenant organizers, the initiative represents a larger movement to empower low income tenants by educating them on the process and importance of voting. In the 15 years since joining the intitiative, MAHTs volunteers and dedicated Civic Engagement Team have increased voter registration and turnout in our target region of Southwest Boston

MAHT's civic engagement efforts include:

  • Raising election awareness
  • Registering tenants to vote
  • Collecting signatures to place referenda on the ballot
  • Educating tenants on ballot measures
  • Promoting meet the candidates events and debates
  • Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts
  • Election Day poll coverage (in 40% of Boston precincts)

For the 2024 election season, MAHT and our volunteers will be out on the streets once again, engaging our fellow tenants on the importance of active citizenship for the Presidential Election on November 5th and the 5 referenda questions on the Massachusetts ballot.

The Mass Alliance of Tenants officially endorses

Question 1, "Authorize the state auditor to audit the state legislature, and remove some existing regulations regarding the auditing process" and

Question 5, "Increase the minimum wage for tipped employees to meet the state's standard minimum wage".
