On Saturday June 21st, we has our annual meeting were we honor outstanding tenant groups, outstanding tenant leader, and our state and local lobby teams. Among the tenant groups we recognized were the Forbes Building Tenant Association, Georgetowne Tenants United, Prescott Mills Tenant Association, Glen Grove Tenant Association, and Michael's House Tenant Association. Tenants from some of our newly formed groups were able to join to see what collective power can achieve! For our outstanding tenant leader we recognized Carmen Allen who had testified at Boston City Hall for the need for more city vouchers for low income individuals by telling her personal story.
We had Boston district councilors Ben Weber and Enrique Penen, at large councilors Julia Mejia and Henry Santana, in addition to council president Ruthzee Louijeune attend. We appreciate their support for more city vouchers, increasing the City Rent Subsidy Program by $1.6 million. The Chief of Housing for the city of Boston Sheila Dillon made a surprise visit. She has shown so much dedication and support for renters in the city of Boston. She has also supported the Forbes Building in their fight to save their building over the last 10 years. We also had mayoral candidate Josh Kraft join us to show his support for low income tenants and affordable housing.
We were grateful to have Mayor Michelle Wu and baby Mira stop by. Wu has been a supporter of low income tenants and MAHT. We appreciate her support for the City Rent Subsidy Program since her time as a city councilor.
We also took a moment to recognize tenant leaders who have pasted on in the last year including Rosalind Dawson, Dave Horan, Seble Argaw, Alvena Hughes, and Arthur Sutton. We appreciate all of the time and energy they put into saving their buildings, fighting for local rent subsidies, and fighting federal budget cuts. Their legacy in the fight for affordable housing will live on.
About 70 attendees including tenants and supporters joined to celebrate our accomplishments and thank the councilors and mayor for their support for low income residents across the city.
