HUD's Section 8 program provides rental assistance for low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private housing market. There are various section 8 mobile voucher programs where one can rent just about anywhere in a given area, state or even the country that a vouchers value covers. Project based rental assistance is not mobile. These are low income vouchers specifically attached to grouped units of housing. Sometimes Project Based Housing is affiliated with a service related program helping specific groups such as the elderly, handicapped, or people with health or mental health conditions.
MAHT recently won long-term Section 8 renewals for 675 Boston apartments, helping to save tenants homes while preserving the city's diversity. MAHT also won the sale of three at-risk buildings to nonprofits in Boston and Worcester protecting those tenants in residence. There are still other challenges for tenants in at risk section 8 related buildings, however, including loss of section 8 funding in other building or their related program funding cuts.
